Nicknamed Queen of the Dark. South Sudanese model, Nyakim Gatwech was born on 27 January 1993 in Gambela, Ethiopia.
Gatwech is popularly known for her naturally dark skin colour which earned her the nickname Queen of the Dark.
She moved from a refugee camp in Africa to the United States of America at the age of 14 but while in the states she almost gave up her dream of becoming a model because of the persistent troll and bullying she faced as a result of her skin colour.
But inspite of all these she stood firm to achieve her aim of becoming a top model.
Her glowing appearance helps her stand out from the crowd when it comes to modelling.
Even after becoming a popular model, Nyakim still had to frequently defend her skin colour as she faced self-esteem issues and comments from people who promote bleaching to lighten skin colour.
An Uber driver once asked her to bleach for $10,000 but she laughed off the request and instead wanted to know why the thought she should change her complexion.
The driver said that she should do it because life would be much more easier for her. For instance, It would be easier for her to be in a relationship and she would get more job opportunities if she was lighter in color. Nyakim however turned it down saying she will rather take the hard road even if being lighter would make my life easier.
Nyakim defied all odds to succeed even when everyone wrote her off because her race thriving in a fashion world dominated by light skinned people.
Her story is nothing short of compelling as she is an inspiration to thousands of women around the world.
