How Mason could still make history in 2019/20

Mason Greenwood has enjoyed a superb first full season as a Manchester United senior player.
With 10 league goals in 2019/20, and 17 in all competitions, the attacker has established himself as one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s most potent attacking outlets.

But, given that the season isn’t quite finished yet, Mason may still have plenty of opportunities to add to his tally for the campaign. The youngster will be hoping he can do just that next Wednesday when we play LASK in the second leg of our Europa League last-16 tie.

Should the Reds progress from that clash, and we're 5-0 up from the first leg, we would face up to three games in Germany, where the subsequent rounds of the competition will be staged at neutral venues.

Therefore, Mason won’t quite have given up on potentially achieving these three remarkable milestones this season…

TEENAGE KICKS

Those 17 goals to his name in 2019/20 means Mason is in some pretty elite company when it comes to teenage United protégées. In fact, the last teenager to net that many first-team goals in a single Premier League season for the Reds was Wayne Rooney in 2004/05.

Wazza also scored 17 in all competitions that term, a record Mason has now equalled, however just one more goal means he would set a new benchmark.

At 18 years old, Mason could also better the record again next season - he won’t turn 20 until 1 October 2021.
THREE AMIGOS

It’s not just Mason who has terrified opposition defences this campaign, so have his attacking partners Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Between them this season, the trio have netted an incredible 61 goals, a figure that could increase in the coming weeks.

Currently Marcus and Anthony have bagged 22 each this term, the only players in the squad who have bettered Mason’s total, which stands just three shy of the 20-goal mark.

United haven’t had three players net 20+ times in all competitions during a single campaign since 1964/65, when Denis Law (39), David Herd (28) and John Connelly (20) achieved such a feat.

Therefore, three more strikes for Mason this season would help Ole’s current batch equal that impressive record.

FOLLOWING IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS

United have a proud history of bringing through Academy graduates, and Greenwood is just the latest in a conveyor belt of phenomenal talents who have emerged from our youth system over the years.

Paul Scholes is arguably the best of the lot and 2002/03 was one of his finest campaigns in a red shirt, when he scored 20 goals in all competitions.

Apart from Rashford this season, no Academy graduate has managed to net 20+ in a single term since Scholesy’s exploits 17 years ago, meaning three more strikes this season would see Mason join a very exclusive club.
