The dust raised by emergence of Senator Hope Uzodinma as the winner of the March, 2019 Imo State governorship election through the January 14, 2020 Supreme Court’s judgement has refused to settle even after 8 months. It is not uncommon to see group of Imolites deliberating on how the man who had earlier lost his candidacy tussle to Uche Nwosu through a Supreme Court judgement could emerge as the winner of the same election. With this as a puzzle that many are yet to understand, a force recently arose to bring about the sack of Governor Hope Uzodinma from office. This time, it is not by the PDP or Emeka Ihedioha, but by the candidate of Refrom and Advancement Party in the 2019 governorship election, Barrister Kingdom Okere.
It is no longer news that Barrister Okere has approached the Federal High Court, Abuja, asking the court to give a judicial interpretation of the Supreme Court Judgement between Senator Hope Uzodinma, and Ugwumba Uche Nwosu over who was duly nominated by the APC as its candidate for the March, 2019 Imo State governorship election. It is on record that the Supreme Court decided the case in favour of Uche Nwosu, a son-in-law to the former Governor of the state, Senator Rochas Okorocha. However, on the 14th of January, 2020, the same Supreme Court declared Senator Hope Uzodinma the winner of the 2019 Imo State governorship election for having pulled the highest number of valid votes as the candidate of the same APC.
The judgement the brought in Senator Hope Uzodinma has continued to be a subject of debate. But this time, Barrister Okere has taken a big step to push for the sack of Governor Hope Uzodinma. This time, it is no longer for the court to look into the election result as it did between Emeka Ihedioha and the Governor, but to give a judicial interpretation of the judgement which declared Uche Nwosu as the duly nominated candidate of the APC, and also to explain who and how Governor Hope Uzodinma was nominated. It is also on record that Barrister Okere is as well asking the court to mandate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), do withdraw the certificate of return issued to Governor Hope Uzodinma, and issue a new one to Emeka Ihedioha as the winner of the March, 2019 Imo State Governorship election.
With the court having fixed September 29, 2020 as the day to hear the case, a day which is exactly 3 weeks from now, Governor Hope Uzodinma could be sacked from office as the Executive Governor of Imo State if the prayers of Barrister Kingdom Okere are granted. Although we cannot say for sure, what the outcome of the judgement would be, but this opinionated article is hinged on the assumption of what could happen if the prayers of Barrister Okere are granted. However, we may have to wait until September 29, 2020 to see what would happen. But before then, I would like to hear your own personal views on this issue.
