4 Nigerian Footballers That Slumped And Died On The Pitch During A Football Game

 Football is a very beautiful game that is loved by people all over the world despite the differences in our Culture, Religion, Nationality, Sex and Mindsets. Nigeria is blessed with a lot of extremely talented footballers, unfortunately some of our football heroes have lost their lives in the round leather game. Below is a list of Nigerian footballers that slumped and died on a football pitch.

1. Sam Okwaraji

Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji popularly known as Sam Okwaraji is a legendary Nigerian footballer. He was very talented in the round leather game and he was one of best that our nation has ever produced. He was also a qualified lawyer with a Masters degree in International Law from Pontifical Lateran University of Rome.

 

Sam the Football Wizard was an Indigene of Imo state, Nigeria. Unfortunately he slumped and died of congestive heart failure during a football match. He died on the 12th of August 1989 at the 77th minute of a World Cup qualification match against Angola at the Lagos National Stadium.

2. Damilola

football player in Osun State simply identified as Damilola, has died after he reportedly slumped during a football match in the Ido area of the state on Monday, September 7.

Late Damilola who plays for Premier Football Club Ofatedo, was about to pass a free-kick to his teammate during the match when he slumped. Eyewitnesses say he was rushed to a hospital closeby but was rejected and then he was rushed to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology where he was certified dead.

His team members say he never showed any signs of illness before the match.

The Coordinator of the Osun Grassroots Football Coaches Association, Leke Hamzat, confirmed his demise to newsmen.

3. David Faramola Oniya

Late Mr David Faramola Oniya was a talented Nigerian footballer and defender that played for a foreign football club called Malaysian Club T-Team.

He slumped and died barely 3mins Into the game between his club and Kelantan. Local media said the T-Team captain, who was 30, collapsed three minutes into the match. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead, the news of his death made the Football match to be stopped after 60minutes.

4. Chieme Martins

Mr Chieme Martins is the last person in our list of talented Nigerian Footballers that lost their lives during a football game. Chieme was a footballer playing for Nasarawa United Football club.

He slumped and died on the 8th of March 2020 during a football match that took place that Sunday. All the medical Personell on the Football pitch did their best to revive him but their efforts were in vain. His team went on to win the match after the death of their team mate. They won the game by 3goals. Indeed it was a sad day for Nasarawa United Football club.
