Professor Mohammed Jiya, a Professor of Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics, Federal University of Technology, Minna Prof. Jiya has delivered the 104th Inaugural Lecture of the University, titled " Mathematics the Language of the Universe: Applied Mathematics My Dialect"

Presenting his lecture today, Wednesday 15th February, 2023 at the University Auditorium, Main Campus Gidan Kwano, Prof. Jiya while explaining that Mathematics is the language of the universe, clarified that the universe can not be read until we have learnt the language and become familiar with the characters in which it is written. "It is written in Mathematical language and the letters are triangles, circles and other geometric figures without which it is humanly impossible to comprehends", he added.

The lecturer further stated that Mathematics is one of the things that distinguishes human from animals through human ability to think and communicate abstract ideas, adding that even spots is enjoyed better through mathematics.

Talking about Mathematical Modeling, the presenter explained that modeling consists of simplifying real life problems and representing them as Mathematical problems. Thereby solving the Mathematical problems and interpreting the solution in the language of real life by the means of formulation, finding solution/ interpretation and evaluation.

He itemized some human activities that Mathematics has contributed in promoting. These included Bank Assets and Liability Portfolio System, the teaching of measurements, the development of logical and critical thinking, the use of mathematics in financing and budgeting, the interpretation of numbers and the use of Mathematics in music composition among others.

In conclusion, the Inaugural lecturer recommendedthat Mathematicians should be employed to teach Mathematics at all levels in Secondary schools. The practice of assigning other people with other professions (I.e Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics and Engineering) to teach Mathematics in secondary schools should be discouraged.

Also, teachers of Mathematics should try as much as possible to make life easy for their students. This could be achieved by relating all topics to real life applications for easy understanding and comprehension.
