The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party and former Governor of Kano State, Rab’iu Musa Kwankwaso, has appealed to the newly elected politicians in the country to concentrate their energies on human capital development rather than personal gains.
Kwankwaso made this appeal while chairing a pre-inauguration lecture organised for Niger State Governor-elect Muhammad Umar Bago and his deputy, Yakubu Garba, in Minna.
He decried the situation, where many public officials once elected abused their privileged positions by using their offices to enrich themselves, their families, and their friends to the detriment of public service in the country.
“Money is not everything; you can become governor and steal all that there is to steal; you can sell all the nooks and crannies of your state. You can sell the mosque and church, land, and pocket the proceeds for yourself; the end result is that the people you neglected at that time will be the ones to send you into a permanent political wilderness.”
Stressing the importance of investing in security, the NNPP presidential candidate also underscored the need to prioritise education.
He said: “In Kano, during my term as governor, I invested massively in education by sponsoring thousands to foreign universities for professional courses. I established two state universities and primary and secondary schools
“In 2019, these were the same youths that helped us win the governorship at that time, but the leadership in the country imposed a leadership, but we did not fight because we knew there would be a rematch in 2023; we all know the results now.”
Kwankwaso further maintained: “The only way to go in this country is to uplift the youth through education and help the vulnerable. I have been out of government for some time, but those youths are still standing by me. All those leaders that believe in amassing wealth, at the end of their tenure, go into political extinction.”
In his remarks, Governor-elect Umar Mohammed Bago pledged to surpass the expectations of the people by raising the bar in governance by operating an open-door policy for a renewed Niger State.
The outgoing governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, emphasised the need for transparency and accountability to gain the trust of the people, as well as putting in place a formidable team for good governance.
