A woman's death during pregnancy, at birth, or shortly after childbirth is a tragedy for her family and for the entire community.
It's all devastating. It's just terrible. It is painful and devastating and we are hoping that it will never happen to our loved ones.
Sadly, these beloved Nigerian celebrities shown below failed to celebrate their babies' conception. Please say a prayer for their families as you read this and for the babies they left behind.
May their souls rest in full peace.
This is a list of 11 Nigerian celebrities who died when they were giving birth. We will never to be forgotten.
MODUPE OYEKUNLE:
Nollywood actress Modupe Oyekunle died in the labour room while at Abeokuta, Ogun State, giving birth to her third child. She died on 4th April 2017.
Segun Ogungbe, a colleague of Modupe Oyekunle in the industry, said Modupe bled for hours before finally passing on.
Segun said: "I was told she kept bleeding after she gave birth but they couldn't stop the bleeding. Unfortunately we lost her.' Modupe gave birth to a living baby girl, popularly known as Oyinbo because of her complexion.
The late actress has famously played Sandra in the hit film Ibi Giga by Segun Ogungbe. She was a member of the Abeokuta-based Igi Aloye caucus which created Odunlade Adekola.
Her husband, her three children and her parents survive.
FUNKE ABISOGUN ALHASSAN:
Nollywood actress, Funke Abisogun died four days after giving birth.
Funke had welcomed her baby safely only to die four days after the baby was born, filmmaker Tunde Ola-Yusuf says.
Ola-Yusuf went to social media to break the news of her death saying: "Just days ago, people celebrated with you for the birth of Ur daughter, now the Sun is set at noon and U is no longer ... May God take care of the newborn child and give Ur husband, family, family friends and industry the strength to bear the loss in general.
Good evening Funke Abisogun, my brother's wife Taofeek Al Hassan Abisogun.'
In 'Olowo Silee,' 'Ajofeebo' among others, Funke Abisogun AlHassan was known for her roles. She happened to die in October 2017.
MOJI OLAIYA:
Nollywood actress Moji Olaiya died in Canada May 17, 2017 barely two months after the birth of her baby.
According to her family members in an interview:
‘Baby Moji was born prematurely. Her EDD was for May 2017 but problems arose that necessitated the induction of Moji to save both the baby's life and her.
Yet after the delivery in March, the health of Moji had not been exactly good. "On the day that Moji died, she went into a crisis about 10 pm local time (3 am Nigerian time). The family member, who was unable to hold back tears, continued: 'His blood pressure shot up and she was unconscious. An ambulance was ordered to take her to hospital. But her condition got worse and she gave up the ghost before they were able to get it to the hospital.’
'Moji couldn't say goodbye to us, didn't she let us keep her daughter, where is her mother going to start from? Her death came too early, I don't think this was typical. This looks like a supernatural assault.' The infant daughter of Moji Olaiya, the baby Mariam Ashabi Moropeda is now two years old. See her underneath:
The Nollywood star Moji Olaiya was buried at the Ebony Vault burial ground in Ikoyi , Lagos.
Moji is the daughter of highlife musician Victor Olaiya.
FUNMILOLA OGUNDANA:
Funmilola Ogundana (born 26 December 1980 - Died 8 February 2013) was a Nigerian sprinter who specialized in the 100 metres.
She died during childbirth in Abuja, Nigeria. She was only 33 years old.
BISI KOMOLAFE:
Bisi Komolafe (1986–2012) was a Nigerian actress, film director and producer best known for her role in the movies Igboro Ti Daru and Aramotu.
Bisi was 26 when she died on 31 December 2012.
Health records at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, reported that she died of pregnancy-related complications.
The actress had been on admission to the University College Hospital in Ibadan for a few days prior to the sad incident. Before her condition unexpectedly recurred she was said to be reacting to treatment.
While at the hospital she received more than 30 units of blood, Komolafe's health had deteriorated even more before she passed on.
She was buried in Ibadan on 4 January 2013.
CHIAMAKA GLORY DE FREITAS:
Chiamaka Glory de Freitas, who married her Portuguese husband Arlindo de Freitas in 2016, lost her life when her first child was born in March 2017.
Mrs De-Freitas has been said to have died from postnatal complications
After Chiamaka's husband and family submitted a petition to the upper legislature house, the Nigerian Senate started an inquiry into the cause of Mrs Chiamaka Glory De-Freitas death.
The information was that this young lady was pregnant and has been admitted to a Lagos hospital. She was said to have attended the hospital with her anti-natal and the doctor said the lady would have to undergo a caesarian operation to which her husband had agreed.
Yet she kept bleeding after CS operation.
Her husband (Alindo De- Freitas) asked for a referral to go to another hospital that could handle the post-operative problem, but the first hospital declined and insisted that the husband declined a 'expository operation.'
The first doctor performed a second surgery on this lady without the permission of her husband and she died after a few days of continuous bleeding.
Afterwards, the first doctor claimed it was the husband's fault not to sign on time.
The heartbroken family of De-Freitas sued the hospital and requested the amount of N50 million as punitive damage to the hospital..
OLABISI MONSURAT:
Lagos based movie producer, Olabisi Monsurat otherwise called Bisket died 30th of March 2019 10 days after welcoming her baby.
She passed away at a clinic in Lagos, reportedly having welcomed her 6th child at the age of 47, according to sources.
According to records she had experienced complications following birth.
Bisi was the producer of a hit film by Bisola Alanu that took Lola Margaret to the limelight. Late Bisket was a member of the Nigerian Association of Theater And Motion Pictures (TAMPAN).
This next batch of mothers, before they died during childbirth, were not famous celebrities. But their stories went viral after they passed away and touched so many hearts of Nigerians.
JUDITH CHIDIMMA EJIKE:
On March 30, 2019, Judith Chidimma Ejike, who was only 26 years of age, died during childbirth. On the other side, her newborn survived, and is now hale and hearty.
Her death affected her friends and relatives so much that they took to social media to express their grief.
CHUKWUNONSO ONYEJEKWE:
29-year-old Chukwunonso Onyejekwe sadly lost her life January 2019 after delivering quintuplets (5 babies) in Asaba, Delta state.
Emmanuel Ezeunu, Head of Clinical Services and Education at the Federal Medical Center in Asaba, said Chukwunonso died 15 hours after delivering her quintuplets after giving birth successfully via the Caesarean Section due to acute respiratory failure.
Babies of the woman were delivered prematurely at the age of 31 weeks. Chukwunonso has suffered from a cardiac arrest twice before her death after birth.
AALIYAH KENNEDY:
Young Aaliyah Kennedy recently organized a baby shower for her friends and relatives. When tragedy hit she was incredibly happy to welcome her baby child.
She died as she was giving birth.
Her heartbroken friends and family members took to social media to pay her tributes and express their shock and grief.
May their souls rest in perfect peace.
