As the Lagos State Government under the administration of HE Babajide Sanwo Olu gets set to close the Third Mainland Bridge this evening, many individuals are beginning to look for alternative ways of evading the impending traffic that the closure would cause.
As many persons are looking for ways to avoid the traffic which would ensue as a result of the bridge closure, others are already looking for ways to make profits out of the situation. This is as a helicopter company has announced that they would make flights available from the Lagos Island areas to the mainland areas.
Many Lagosians have decried the move by the Lagos State Government to close down the bridge which links the Lagos Island to the mainland axis. According to those who criticized government's move to partially close down the bridge, the closure would cause untold hardships on motorists and commuters who make use of the bridge on a daily basis.
However, the Lagos government has allayed the fears of the citizens, saying that the renovation of the bridge has been long overdue, and if neglected any longer, could cause a major catastrophe. To this end, the government announced that the closure of the bridge would take effect from 24th July, 2020, and last for 6 months.
Now as individuals look for ways to avoid the traffic gridlock which the closure may cause, a company known as Nestflu is set to offer a helicopter flight to citizens from The island to the mainland axis.
When a concerned Lagosian made SMS inquiries regarding the cost of such a flight, the company announced that it would cost $5,000 (Five Thousand dollars) for a 10 minute flight from the island to the mainland.
When converted to Nigerian currency, it was realized that $5k would amount to about 1.8 million naira. A situation that has caused angry reactions from Lagosians and Twitter users who are of the opinion that that amount is too much for an ordinary 10-30 minute flight, saying the same amount would take a person to Dubai and back to Nigeria. Others who commented expressed concerns that the closure of the bridge may be a ploy by high sitting politicians to enrich themselves through services such as the one offered by the helicopter company.
