Luxury cars are much more than conveyance. It's swag, style, flamboyance and power—all moulded into one.
Bugatti pulled the cover off its bespoke La Voiture Noire at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and has since built several more specialty vehicles. Outside of an outrageous exterior, highlighted by an aggressive front fascia, quad exhaust tips, and a massive illuminated "Bugatti" badge out back, the La Voiture Noire is the most expensive new car ever. With a selling price of $18.7 million (and an asking price of $12.5 million), it snubs its nose at other less-expensive one-offs.
But if the Bugatti La Voiture Noire is now the most expensive new car, what vehicles does it surpass? Well, one-offs from Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz aren't far behind in price, and even some of the La Voiture Noire's siblings make the list. Take a look at our list of the 6 most expensive new cars ever.
1. Bugatti La Voiture Noire: $18.68 million or Rs 132 crore
Bugatti La Voiture Noire: It uses the same quad-turbo W16 8.0-litre engine with 1,500 hp and 1,600 Nm of torque as the Chiron, Chiron Sport, and Divo. A modern interpretation of Jean Bugatti’s personal Type 57 SC Atlantic that got lost during World War II, the one of the one Bugatti La Voiture Noire is the new 'most expensive car in the world'. Price: $19 million (approximately Rs 132 crore)
2. Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita
Underneath the lustrous finish lies a 4.8-liter, dual-supercharged V8 with a total output of 1,004 hp and 797 lb-ft, which means it should have little to no trouble overtaking semis on the freeway. The car’s specifications — in both performance and price — are nearly comical at this point, and just three were ever made.
Alex Todd Brand Manager at BoxyMo commented "The 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe was sold for $8.7 million in 1987. That and many others won’t be included in this list, they are no longer available in the market."
3. Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta: $17.5 million or Rs 124.8 crore
A surprise entry, the exotic car boasts of a 7.3-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine, with a power of 789bhp. It also has a six-speed manual gearbox. In addition, it spots forged aluminum wheels—20-inch in the front and 21-inch in the rear. The rear wheel fairings are made from carbon fibre. Although roofless, the Zonda HP Barchetta has a roof scoop.
The beast was a brainchild of Italian sports car company Pagani Automobili, Horacio Pagani and debuted at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, England. Interestingly, Pagani reserved one of the three HP Barchettas as a 60th birthday present to himself.
4. Rolls-Royce Sweptail
Rolls-Royce Sweptail: One-off and hand-built, Rolls-Royce Sweptail used to wear the crown for the world's most expensive car. It was commissioned in 2013 by a super-yacht and aircraft specialist. A 6.75-litre V12 powertrain with 453 bhp under the bonnet, the exclusive Rolls is surely the crème de la crème of luxury. Price: $13 million (approximately Rs 99.93 crore)
5. Bugatti Centodieci: $9 million or Rs 64 crore
Bugatti makes a re-entry here with its Centodieci. The name translates to the number 110 in Italian. The sculptural beauty coincided with Bugatti’s 110th year of inception.
Bugatti created a reinterpretation of the epochal EB110, which, when presented in 1991, was considered the fastest and most extraordinary supercar of its time. The Chiron-based homage to the EB110 will be produced in limited numbers of 10.
Bugatti Centodieci is powered by a tuned version of the Chiron’s powertrain. The 8.0-litre behemoth delivers 1577bhp. The Centodieci can hit zero to 100kmph in a mere 2.4 seconds. However, the top speed has been electronically limited to 380kmph compared to Chiron’s 420kmph.
6. Lamborghini Veneno
The car is absolutely stunning from every angle, and to this day, we’re not convinced it isn’t an alien spacecraft surveying our planet for eventual takeover. It just doesn’t seem real. The only thing more remarkable than the look is the price — a whopping $4.5 million.
