Oleksandra “Sasha” Balaba, who was named 2020 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year while competing at the University of Wyoming, has signed a grant-in-aid to enroll at Louisiana-Monroe in August. Balaba will be eligible to compete for the Warhawks in 2020-21.
A native of Brovary, Ukraine, Balaba compiled an 11-10 overall record in singles play last season, including a 5-5 mark in duals, while playing exclusively at the No. 2 position. She won the “B” Draw title (4-0) in the Wyoming Invite last fall. Balaba also was selected to the All-Mountain West Double Team with partner Maria Oreshkina. She went 13-8 in doubles play in 2019-20, including a 6-3 record during the spring while playing mostly with Oreshkina.
We are very excited for Sasha to join the Warhawk family,” ULM tennis coach Jessica Giuggioli said. “She had a successful freshman year at the University of Wyoming, and I look forward to helping her build upon that success in the upcoming years.”
The right-handed Balaba attained a career-best Junior ITF world ranking of 459 in July 2017. She also advanced to the finals in both singles and doubles play at the National Ukraine Championship.
