THE Nigeria Union of Teachers, Lagos Branch, has called on the state government to provide more funds for infrastructural development of schools across the State.
The Chairman, NUT, Lagos State, Mr Adedoyin Adesina, made this call at the 2020 World Teachers’ Day held at the NUT Pavilion, Lagos.
The theme of this year’s WTD is, ‘Leading in crisis, re-imagining the future’.
Adesina said due to daily influx of immigrants, the educational, social, and physical infrastructure of the state were overstrained.
He, therefore, called for the building of low-cost classrooms and the implementation of the UNESCO standard of one teacher to 25 learners.
“In the wake of the much talked about coronavirus, the need for additional classrooms to space our students will not be out of place. This is the ideal time to implement the UNESCO standard of one teacher to 25 learners in a classroom. Low-cost building can be built as an emergency across the state.”
Other issues he addressed were shortage of teachers, creation of the office of headmaster general/permanent secretary in the primary school sector, to mention a few.
